A PPS number is the free tax and public-services identifier issued by Social Protection. The IRP card is the physical residence permit from ISD proving lawful stay, and costs €300 per year.
Until the job is registered with Revenue against a PPS number, payroll must apply emergency tax and the first payslip can drop sharply. It is fully refunded once registration completes, but arrivals should be warned so it is not a shock.
